Become a flint knapper

The Flintman Company will be running a series of practical one day courses on flint, and its use in structures. The courses are aimed at private individuals as well Architects, Conservation Officers, Planning Officers. During 2004 Courses are to be held in Lewes, East Sussex and on National Trust land adjacent to the picturesque Cuckmere Valley, near Seaford, East Sussex. The Courses dates will be anounced later this year. The use of traditional building materials such as flint, forms an essential element in the promotion of ‘local distinctiveness’. These courses emphasis and encourage the importance and need of good practice in flint construction and conservation.

The main emphasis of the day will be both practical and informative. The first part of the morning will be split between: flints - history, styles, and good practice building flint walls; mortars - analysis, looking at lime, matching and making. The rest of the day will be spent 'hands on', mixing mortars, repointing and relaying flints. Throughout the day discussion and debate will revolve around the needs and concerns of both the contractor and planning supervisors. Advice will be given on determining the condition of walls? What to specify? Which flints to use? Which sand? Which lime? Where can you get supplies from? Where to obtain further advice?

By the end of the day all participants will have had a reasonable opportunity to repoint and rebuild a section of a flint wall, together with sharing experiences and concerns about over seeing flint work on a professional level. It is hoped then that all participants will leave equipped with the knowledge to assess, advise and give specifications on flint work, or even take on any small personal flint projects. At the end of the Course you will also be provided with Course summary notes and a ‘Continuing Practice Certificate’.

Each course will have a maximum number of participants. Numbers are kept low to ensure all levels and interests can be catered for. The day format would start at approximately 9.30 and end at 4.30pm. Lunch will be provided together with teas and coffee through out the day. All materials, tools and safety equipment will be supplied. Individual tuition or specially designed group courses can be catered for. Please call to discuss your special requirements.
