Who
are the flintman company?
The
Flintman Company Limited is a small friendly company that specializes
in the restoration and conservation of historic buildings. Based
in Lewes, East Sussex, the Company carries out work through out
Southern England. Established in 1989 as flint and stone masonry
specialists the Company now carries out all aspects of traditional
methods and materials as well as an active
education programme with courses and talks.
The
Flintman Company Limited are committed to offer and encourage
good practise in the care and preservation of historic buildings
and structures (with a particular interest in flint). The Company
understands the issues and needs of working withing these conservation
areas. They give consultation with technical advice on repairs
and sourcing of skills and materials. They have worked on numerous
large and small conservation projects varying from scheduled monuments,
listed and ecclesiastical buildings, to garden walls and special
features. Work ranges from renovation and conservation to building
new structures. Clients vary from National Conservation bodies,
architects, churches bodies, archeological societies, District
Councils and private individuals. Recent clients include English
Heritage and The National Trust. The Company have been featured
in numerous publications. David Smith was featured under ‘living
national treasures’ in Country Life Magazine. Articles in
publications include Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine. Recently
the Company was filmed for a new C4 television series on lost
buildings. The programme will be shown in the Spring of 2004.
The
Company has a particular interest in raising the profile of flint,
promoting its use and upholding the importance of good practise.
Past projects have included an exhibition on flint, a series of
walks and talks and for the last four years, running practical
one day courses. David Smith is currently co-writing a ‘user
friendly‘ book on flint. This is to be published in the
Spring of 2004. During 2004 the Company will be running its annual
series of practical one day courses on flint work, and its use
in structures. The courses are aimed at Architects, Conservation
Officers, Planning Officers and private individuals. These courses
emphasis and encourage the importance and need of good
practice in flint construction and conservation.
